Community Royale Grand Marshall

Piper Shumar

Piper was born with a non-functioning colon but was able to find a reprieve through her love of biking that made her feel “normal”. Through Pipers journey she learned, at a young age, the importance of being active & living a healthy lifestyle and she wanted to share this knowledge with others her age. During the post-race celebrations of the 2017 Iceman Cometh Challenge Piper noticed cans strewn all around Timber Ridge and thought that if she could collect and return them, she could buy herself a new bike helmet. After collecting and returning all the cans Piper was left with $97. Her parents impressed by her drive and ambition guided Piper to do something more selfless with this money and this was he start of Piper’s Project. In 2017 Piper and her parents donated two bikes to the Bikes for Tikes group in Kalkaska. Excited by the good that Piper was able to do she has been shattering personal goals for the last several years donating 27 bikes in 2018 and 217 bikes in 2020 despite a global pandemic. In 2018 Piper was able to receive her own gift of a cure for her condition and has been healthy ever since. Piper plans to continue to give back to the communities that have helped her by volunteering with Bikes for Teens at the local Toys for Tots this Christmas.
